Caged Pulse Jets

Caged Pulse Jets is an interactive, kinetic sound sculpture. The caged birds are five spinning pulse jet engines of various sizes that create a range of percussive and droning tones.

Through a completely interactive interface, the public can create sound compositions ranging from the symphonic to the cacophonous while they are held captive by the fiery jets spinning by their own thrust.

The public can enjoy playing these jet engines in an explosive cacophonous symphony while watching them spin around and expel fire. Caged Pulse Jets is a highly entertaining sound sculpture that is fun to play and watch for kids and adults alike..

Caged Pulse Jets Technical Information

Sound Component

The Pulse Jet can sound like an irregular explosive drum beat and can go up to a single high pitch horn like note. Depending on the size of the jet, the smaller jet will have less bass and the largest jet can have a distinct deep drone. Together the jets create an extremely unique composition of high and low pitched percussive sounds in the round, or in stereo as the jets are also spinning on their own thrust. Some of the pulsing frequencies can resonate into the ground, so you can feel the noise. In an outdoor environment the noise level of the jets is within safe levels. In an indoor environment, the jets would have to run in controlled time sessions based on the reverberation of the frequencies. Caged Pulse Jets usually runs at specific time slots around 15 minutes, where the public has a chance to experience the sculpture and understand the interface.

As an art installation at a music festival, the Pulse Jets do well when active in between sets of music, as the amplified music will override the sculpture.
