Capsule is an organically inspired mechanical sculpture which responded interactively to our community during the pandemic.

The community was invited to capture their thoughts on paper and insert the notes directly into the sculpture.

When Capsule burned, the combusting notes kinetically set the sculpture into motion, causing it to open, exposing its inner core, and revealing a new dynamic shape.

Capsule harnessed the transformative power of fire, not only to literally open itself, but also to send our collective hopes and dreams into the ether.

Capsule is the first joint project between Christina Sporrong and Christian Ristow. Ristow is known for creating a variety of animatronic, mechanical and robotic sculptures, which are featured at art festivals all over the world.

During the first wave of the pandemic, Capsule served as a vessel for the hopes and fears of members of the community, who were invited to capture their thoughts on paper and insert the notes directly into the sculpture. On one very special night the hands were filled with firewood and the combusting notes kinetically set the sculpture into motion, causing it to open, exposing its inner core and revealing a dynamic new shape.

In its second evolution, Capsule now moves on its own. The audience is invited to actuate the sculpture, causing it to fold and unfold slowly to reveal the illuminated glass cones on the inner sphere, like a flower opening and closing in cycles with sunlight. Capsule catches the daily light and is illuminated at night to act as a beacon, reminding us that there is growing light even in the darkest of times. Capsule is currently going on tour with Transfix, and will be up and running in various cities in the States.
